What is a relationship?

Someone asked me if a relationship is just a friendship and a little more.

This was my response:

There's a lot more to a relationship than just "friendship and a little more."

It starts off small; just simple feelings, being giddy when that person is around, smiling just because you saw their smile. Then, in time, that grows into something more. One day, you realize you can't imagine your life without that person.

When you love someone so deeply, you open up to them completely. When you see them, the first thing you do is run up to them and give them a hug. Not a friend hug, but the kind of hug that only two people in love can give one another. It's tenderness, closeness. More is expressed in that hug than most people express in bed together. There's nothing in the world like it and you never want it to end.

When you're with them, you feel safe. You can say everything and anything that's on your mind: you can vent about work or you can cry on their shoulder, and they'll always be there. You can let down your guard, let go of any facades, discard anything that isn't you and expose yourself to them completely. You feel like the whole world could come crumbling down around you and you'd still have a smile on your face because being with that person is all that matters.
You feel at home.

And the thought of losing that person strikes fear into your heart deeper than any fear you've ever experienced. And losing them...I pray you never learn.

That's what a relationship is like. It's far more and far deeper than just friends with a little more added. It's your life combined with theirs. It's symbiotic. It's strengthening. It's loving. It becomes your life.
